dare to be bold : the courage to stand out

Laurent Moreschi

From a young age, we are shaped by society and education to follow a norm. At school, we are expected to conform to the expectations of teachers, learn to remain discreet, and avoid standing out too much. Later, in professional life, we are encouraged to fit into a mold, behave predictably, and avoid straying from conventional paths. But this normality ultimately makes us like everyone else, when in reality, all it takes to stand out is daring to be different.

Why are we afraid to be different?

Psychology teaches us that humans are social beings. Since the dawn of time, our survival has depended on our ability to integrate into a group. The fear of rejection is deeply ingrained in us: we fear the judgment of others, the disapproval of society, and the possibility of not being accepted. This is what drives most people to conform, follow trends, and avoid taking risks. Yet, in a world where uniformity is the standard, those who dare to be different are the ones who leave a lasting impact.

The inevitable criticism: whatever you do, there will always be detractors

One reality we must accept is that no matter what we do, there will always be critics. The great figures of history, artists, and bold entrepreneurs have all faced skepticism and jealousy. If we wait for everyone's approval before taking action, we will never accomplish anything. Being bold means accepting that we will never please everyone, but what truly matters is being aligned with ourselves.

How to cultivate boldness in everyday life?

  • Stop trying to please everyone: Understand that you cannot satisfy everyone, and that’s perfectly fine.

  • Own your ideas and values: Stay true to what you believe in, even if it goes against the current.

  • Take unconventional initiatives: Speak in public, propose new ideas, and experiment with different approaches.

  • Don't fear ridicule: What seems embarrassing to us is often quickly forgotten by others. It is our own perception that holds us back.

  • Surround yourself with inspiring people: Boldness is contagious. Being around those who dare helps us step up as well.

The Dubai example: an entrepreneur with no inhibitions

During a trip to Dubai, I witnessed a fascinating scene. At a water park, at the top of an attraction, a man—probably from a neighboring country—was engaging with everyone, talking about his new business. He was taking advantage of the waiting time to introduce himself, distribute his contacts, and promote his company—all while wearing a swimsuit! What could be more unusual than witnessing a business pitch in such a setting? His approach was bold, and while some may have found it odd, he had understood something essential: if he wanted to succeed, he had to dare to stand out.

Being different is easy… you just have to dare!

In the end, standing out is not as difficult as it seems. What holds us back is only our own fear. But once we realize that this fear has no real consequences, a world of possibilities opens up to us. Boldness attracts attention, creates opportunities, and brings an unparalleled sense of freedom.

I experience this daily in my various entrepreneurial activities. Even before that, I’ve often encountered reactions of surprise. When people learn that I left a prestigious position as a Senior Associate at a leading Swiss bank to become a magician (few people take the time to consider the broader picture). For others, however, it represents an act of courage, a conscious life choice. In the end, it doesn't matter what people think. Today, I have no regrets. I have gained what I was searching for above all: freedom.

So why not give it a try? Dare to be different. Dare to be yourself
